Mariager is a historic, picturesque town situated on the longest and most beautiful Danish fjord. It is nicknamed "the city of roses", thanks to the rose garden and flowers planted next to historic houses, even in the very center.
The city delights with its perfectly preserved historic buildings. There are half-timbered houses and low, colorful tenement houses with sloping roofs. They stand in narrow cobbled streets and in summer they are drowning in flowers. The most common roses are planted here, and one of the main attractions of Mariager is the Rose Garden with over 400 varieties of these beautiful plants.
From the Middle Ages, Mariager was a center for obtaining salt. Currently, there is a Salt Center on the shore of the fjord, where you can see the tools for evaporating and collecting it, as well as take part in workshops. Its most important monument, the medieval monastery church in Mariager, stands in the city center. There are also two museums, the Mariager Museum and the Sødisbakkes Museum.
Its location on the shore of the beautiful Mariager Fjord makes the city a center of active and water tourism. There are many hiking routes around, while sightseeing boats depart from the marina in Mariager on the fjord. Yachts and sailing boats also moor here.
