Køge is a historic city that is part of the Copenhagen metropolitan area. There is one of the most valuable complexes of 16th and 17th century half-timbered buildings in Denmark and wide, sandy beaches.

The city was founded in the 13th century and thanks to the port it developed as a thriving commercial center. Thanks to this, it quickly got richer, which was reflected in the local architecture. The golden age of Køge fell on the period between the 15th and 17th centuries. A large part of the buildings in the Old Town comes from these times. Its most important parts are the 16th century half-timbered houses and the Gothic church in Køge. There is a building with this structure, considered to be the oldest in Denmark. It is currently used by the local library. The 16th-century timber frame house also houses the Køge Museum.

Due to its coastal location and sandy beaches, Køge is a popular vacation spot. The inhabitants of the nearby Copenhagen eagerly come here for weekend excursions. The area around Ølsemagle Revle Lagoon is a famous place for sunbathing, and there are city beaches in Køge itself. You can also take advantage of the attractions of the Køge Svømmeland water park.

In the vicinity of Køge there are remains of a Viking settlement, Vikingeborgen Borgring. They are open to the public and there is an archaeological exhibition next to it. An interesting place is the KØS Art Museum in Public Space, and a place for family trips is the Kjøge Mini-By miniature park showing what the city looked like in the 16th and 17th centuries.
