Herning is a city that used to be one of the most important centers of the Danish textile industry in the past. Currently, it is also associated with contemporary art museums and several buildings designed by Jørn Utzon, the creator of the Sydney Opera House project.

The city was founded in the 18th century and developed as a textile manufacturing center. Today, factories related to the textile industry still operate here, and these traditions are recalled by the Museum of Textiles located in the former factory. South of Herning, you can also visit the Søby Brown Coal Museum, located on the site of a former mine.

Herning's most important attractions are related to contemporary art. It houses the Heart Museum of Contemporary Art, located in a modernist building, which is one of the most important institutions of this type in Denmark, and the Carl-Henning Pedersen and Else Alfelts Museum, which collects Pedersen's works. Those interested in contemporary architecture will also find buildings designed by Jørn Utzon, as well as the unusual outdoor sculpture of Elia by Ingvar Cronhammar.

There are numerous walking paths around the city, such as Knudmosen and Haunstrup Brunkulslejer. You can also relax by the lakes of Arnborg and Birdsong. Local history is shown by the Herningsholm Museum and the Herning Open-Air Museum.
