Elia is a modern sculpture designed by Ingvar Cronhammar. It has the shape of a spherical dome with a diameter of 60 m, topped with four 32 m high columns. In the center of the dome there is a large gas burner which releases a column of fire 8.4 m high and 1 m wide at irregular intervals. It remains visible for about half a minute each time.
The sculpture was specially prepared for lightning strikes in the event of a storm. Under the dome, the ground was hollowed out in the shape of a concave bowl. It acts like a giant drum that amplifies the sound of the strike of each thunder.
The sculpture in Herning symbolizes the abyss of hell. This impression is intensified by its black color, broken only with red elements crowning the top of each column.
