Pleven is a historic city of great importance to the history of Bulgaria. In 1877, a battle was fought here between the Turkish and Russian troops, which was an important step towards the independence of Bulgaria.
The history of the city dates back to the Thracian times and Roman rule over these areas. In the Middle Ages it was an important trade center, and the most important monument from that period are the ruins of the Storgozia fortress and the church of St. Nicholas. In the city you can also see the Orthodox Church of St. Paraskeva and the Chapel-Mausoelum of St. Jerzy the Winner.
The most important episode in the history of Plewen was the several-month-long siege of the local fortress defended by the Turks by the Russian army under the command of General Totleben. It was an important Turkish defense point, and its fall contributed greatly to the outcome of the entire war. The most important attraction of Plewen today is the Panorama Pleven, a museum dedicated to the battle of 1877. There is a picture of the battle and numerous monuments related to it. The Museum of the Tsar the Liberator Alexander II is also connected with the Turkish-Russian war.
Important attractions in Plewen include the Kaikala Park on the outskirts of the city with lakes, rock climbing, walking areas, as well as the amphitheater and the Plewen Zoo. In the city itself, the walking area is the well-kept City Park.
In addition to the museums related to the Battle of Plewna, you can also visit the Regional History Museum and the Wine Museum in the city.
