Wels is a city with ancient roots and many interesting monuments. In the historic center, there is an old buildings, headed by the town church and the imperial castle.
The origins of the city date back to Roman times, and the then Ovilava was one of the largest centers in this part of the Empire. It was destroyed as a result of the invasions of Germanic tribes, and Wels was founded on its ruins. It flourished at the end of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, and its most important monuments date from that time.
The main attraction of Wels is the well-preserved buildings in the old town. In its central part there is a market with tenement houses from different eras. There is also a church of St. John the Baptist and the renaissance imperial castle. The former Franciscan monastery houses the Archaeological Museum with monuments from Roman times. While visiting Wels, do not forget about the remains of the city walls with the Lederer tower and the 19th century water palace.
The city also has a lot of family attractions that attract people traveling with children. These include Wels Zoo, Welio Science Center and Welldorado Water Park.
