St. Leonhard im Pitztal is a Tyrolean village situated at the foot of the Pitztal Glacier. In winter, there are two ski resorts in the area, and in summer, the surrounding peaks and slopes of the valleys encourage hiking and climbing.
The village has existed since the Middle Ages. In the past, its inhabitants dealt mainly with cattle breeding. This situation began to change in the 19th century, when the first lovers of mountain hiking and climbing began to reach Pitztal. Skiers joined them over time, and now St. Leonhard im Pitztal is a thriving center of active tourism, with excellent accommodation facilities, from small, family-run guesthouses to high-class hotels.
In the area belonging to St. Leonhard im Pitztal rises to the highest mountain in North Tyrol, the Wildspitze with an altitude of 3,768 m. alpine ibex. Numerous hiking trails lead not only to the highest peak, but also to the upper parts of the valley and other peaks.
Both in summer and in winter, the greatest attraction of St. Leonhard im Pitztal is the Pitztal Glacier. In winter, there is a ski resort with approx. 50 km of ski slopes. The second station is below the glacier at the entrance to the valley. There is also a toboggan run and cross-country ski runs. The Gletscher Express cable car takes you to an altitude of 3,340 meters, where there is the highest restaurant in Austria, Cafe 3340, which is open all year round, and offers a magnificent view of the glacier and the surrounding mountains. In summer, there are hiking trails on the glacier, and climbing is possible in the neighboring mountains.
