The Panorama Museum allows visitors to see the monumental work of Johan Sattler, depicting Salzburg and the areas surrounding the city. The picture presents a view of the city from the Salzburg castle. In addition to the main panorama in the museum you can also see other paintings by Sattler (the so-called cosmorama).
Panorama of Salzburg has an area of about 130 m2, and it took the artist three years to create it. The picture is painted with incredible care and has a huge number of details. To be able to appreciate all these small details, the museum is equipped with binoculars for visitors.
The panorama was opened to the public for the first time in 1829. In the nineteenth century, this type of attraction was very popular, which is why the Salzburg panorama "traveled" around Europe and was shown in many places. At the beginning of the 20th century it lost its popularity and was not exhibited until the 1970s. At the beginning of the 21st century, it was renovated and exposed again to the public.
