Kapitelplatz is one of the central squares of Salzburg, known among others from the fountain called Kapitelschwemme. The Cathedral adjoins the southern side of the square, from the east there are archdiocesan buildings, and from the west the monastery of St. Peter. The most recognizable element on the square is a modern sculpture by Stephan Balkenhol, depicting a golden ball on a tripod, on which a man stands in a relaxed pose. The whole structure is altogether about nine meters high.
At the site where Kapitelschwemme is today, there was a watering hole for horses in the Middle Ages. The current fountain was created in 1732 on the initiative of Archbishop Leopold Firmian, and was designed by Franz Anton Danreiter. Her style refers to Roman fountains. It is decorated with a baroque sculpture depicting the god Neptune with a trident on a sea horse, made by Josef Anton Pfaffinger.
