Hainzenberg is an alpine village, which in the past was a large mining center, and today thanks to its location, interesting monuments and numerous opportunities for active leisure, it is one of the most interesting places in the famous Ziller Valley.
The settlement was founded in the Middle Ages and the surrounding mountains were already penetrated by prospectors of ores and precious metals. The first documented information about gold mines that operated until the beginning of the 20th century comes from the 16th century. One of them, the Zell am Ziller Gold Mine, is open to the public and is one of the most important attractions of Hainzenberg.
In addition to the mine, tourists can walk along the mining trail with information boards on the history of gold mining. In Hainzenberg, you can also visit the baroque Maria Rast pilgrimage church and the museum dedicated to cheese and dairy production.
A highlight of Hainzenberg is its location among the mountains. Several hundred kilometers of hiking trails have been marked out here. There is also one of Austria's longest summer toboggan runs, the Gerlosstein lift, over 7 km long, and the Hainzenberg Zoo, home to animals from the Alps.
