London Wetland Centre
London Wetland Center is a nature reserve founded on wetlands in Barnes. Originally, there were several small water reservoirs in this area, which were transformed into various types of wetlands with the establishment of the reserve. Many species of birds can be found here, including grebes, ducks, bitterns, kingfishers and sparrows. Other animals also live here, including otters, bats and amphibian grubs, known as water rats.
The center was founded in 2000 on the initiative of the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust. It was the first city project of this type in Great Britain. It currently covers an area of approximately 40 hectares, of which approximately 75% has been recognized as an Area of Special Importance for Science.
In 2005, the London Wetland Center appeared on the BBC's "Seven Natural Wonders" as one of the wonders in London. In 2012, in a vote organized also by the BBC, he was awarded the Britain's Favorite Nature Reserve.
