London Canal Museum

The London Canal Museum is dedicated to London canals and the history of the ice industry in London. It is the only museum dedicated to inland waterways in England. Exhibitions present, among others the history of the canals, the transport that took place on them and the people who worked on them. Meetings and talks as well as film screenings on this topic are regularly organized here. On selected days, you can also go on a canal boat cruise.

The museum is housed in a Victorian building of a former ice warehouse, built in 1862-63. It contained ice imported from Norway by Carl Gatti, a Swiss entrepreneur who developed the ice industry in London. It is believed that thanks to him, ice cream for the first time became widely available here. The museum was opened in 1992. In the basement of the building there are still two, well-preserved, ice wells. One of them can be viewed while visiting the facility.
