Russell Square

Russell Square is a large square in Bloomsbury, next to the British Museum. He was named after the fifth Duke of Bedford, Francis Russell, who at the turn of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries contributed to the development of this part of London. Russell Square is entered in the register of historic parks and gardens of the 2nd degree.

Terraced houses for middle class families were located in the area extended by the prince. The square was to be the central place of his design. In its southern part in 1807 a statue of Francis Russell stood. He holds his hand on the plow, a sheep lies at his feet. He looks proudly at his work.

There is a taxi booth in the west corner. In 1875-1914 61 such facilities were created in London. 13 of them have survived to this day and they are inscribed on the list of Class II monuments. It was a place where drivers could take a break for a meal and rest.
