Bruce Castle Museum
A historic manor house from the 16th century located on Lordship Lane in London. Bruce Castle is one of the oldest preserved English brick houses and one of the most mysterious. Little is known about the beginnings of today's museum, which houses the archives of London's Haringey district, as well as exhibitions on this topic.
The name of the court comes from the surname Bruce, who previously owned this land. House of Bruce was standing here, of which the sources really speak little. Today we can admire the historic manor house, whose first owner was Sir William Compton. He acquired Bruce Castle in 1514 and since then the Compton family owned the court throughout the 16th century. However, the first reliable reference to Bruce Castle refers to 1516, when Henry VIII met his sister Margaret, Queen of Scotland, at "Maiton Compton House next to Tottenham".
Bruce Castle was rebuilt several times in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. Probably the oldest part of the building is a free-standing, cylindrical tower in the Tudor style.
