Apsley House

Apsley House is a house that was owned and is currently a form of commemoration of Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, known as the "Iron Prince" - the winner at Waterloo. Currently, Apsley House is a museum of beautifully decorated interiors, in which about 3,000 paintings, sculptures, collections of silver and porcelain products are presented. A large part of the collection are gifts of crowned heads from all over Europe.

Apsley House owes its name to Henry Bathurst, known as Lord Apsley, on whose order in 1771-1778 a neoclassical red brick tenement house was erected. In 1817, in accordance with the wishes of the "Iron Prince", the building was expanded (the facade was clad with stone) and equipped to resemble royal residences. Nearby is the monumental equestrian statue of the prince, cast from cannons captured at Waterloo.

Apsley House was also known as the First Tenement House in London as the first house seen by travelers arriving in London after crossing the Knightsbridge gate.
