Ragged School Museum

A museum in the Limehouse district, right on Regent's Canal. Dedicated to the education of children from the nineteenth-century East End, located in three Victorian buildings, where in 1877-1908 there was a free school for children from poor families. The museum was opened in 1990 thanks to the efforts of the local community.

The school was founded by Thomas John Barnardo, a philanthropist, who in addition to the school also founded many orphanages. Ragged School was located in buildings that originally served as warehouses for goods transported through the canal. Around 1,000 students attended the school during the period of greatest popularity. The facility was closed when enough government schools were established. For the next 30 years, the Lewis Leathers factory was located in the building.

The museum has a reconstructed kitchen and a classroom with authentic benches, boards and textbooks. Admission to the museum is free, a small fee is required from visitors who want to take part in the Victorian style lesson, which is always held on the first Sunday of the month.
