White Cube
White Cube is a gallery of modern art, operating in two branches in London and one in Hong Kong. In London, exhibitions can be seen in the city center at Mason's Yard and Bermondsay. The latter is currently the largest gallery in Europe in terms of occupied space - the exhibition space measures over 5400 m2. The exhibitions are temporary and change every few months.
The White Cube was founded in 1993 by Jay Joplin, husband of Sam Taylor-Johnson, belonging to a group of artists called Young British Artists (YBA). Initially, the gallery was located in a small room on Duke Street, a street traditionally associated with art. It was the first gallery that provided YBA members with individual exhibitions. In 2000, the facility was moved to a building at Hoxton Square. Soon new branches were opened both in London and abroad, however, after several years of activity, White Cube branches in West London and Sao Paolo were closed.
