Aviemore is a tourist and ski resort in the Scottish Cairngorm mountains. Its surroundings are a popular place for active tourism, both in winter and summer. You can go skiing, mountain hiking, rafting on mountain rivers and organize survival expeditions.
Until the mid-twentieth century, Aviemore was a village whose inhabitants made a living mainly by cattle-breeding and other agricultural activities. However, the growing popularity of skiing meant that the vicinity of the village was selected for the construction of one of the Scottish ski resorts. It gave an impulse to the rapid development of Aviemore, and the offer of tourist attractions is expanding here every year.
The most important center for winter tourism in the region is the Cairngorm Mountain Ski Resort. It is the sixth highest peak in Great Britain, rising to an altitude of 1245 m above sea level. Its attractions are not only the ski runs with beautiful views, but also the highest situated funicular in the country, the Cairngorm Mountain Railway, almost 2 km long. There are also chair lifts in the resort, and in winter the routes are artificially snowed and illuminated.
The Cairngorm Mountain Cableway also transports tourists in summer. From the top, you can go hiking using the numerous hiking trails. You can also visit the Garden on the Mount Cairngorm with alpine vegetation and characteristic of the Scottish mountains. In summer, in addition to hiking in the Avienmore area, you can also go kayaking, rafting, and take part in orienteering and survival excursions organized by local travel agencies.
