Fort George

Fort George is a powerful 18th-century fortress near Ardersier. It is based on a characteristic star-shaped design. It has remained virtually unchanged to this day. It is now open to the public. You can see exhibits showing how the fort was used in different periods. At the same time, the fort serves as military barracks.

The Highlanders' Museum is located in the former lieutenant's barrack. His collections include uniforms, weapons, medals, commemorative posters from World War I and photographs. The exhibitions include the history of the regiments, their connections with the clans and the figures of outstanding branch members.

The fort was built to pacify the Scottish highlands following the Jacobite uprising of 1745. It replaced the previous fort bearing the same name, and built in 1715. Interestingly, the current fortress was never attacked and remained in constant use as a garrison.
