Urquhart Castle
Urquhart Castle is the ruins of a medieval castle. The building consisted of two surrounded by walls and connected courtyards. Fragments of walls, remains of the gatehouse and the tower, originally five storeys, have survived to the present day. The ruins offer a panoramic view of the entire Loch Ness Lake, which is the largest water reservoir in depth in the British Isles.
Construction of the castle began in the 13th century. In the next century, the stronghold played a significant role during the Scottish wars with England, but in the 17th century the building was abandoned.
According to legend, the lake with the castle ruins is inhabited by a monster, affectionately known as Nessie. It is one of the biggest cryptological puzzles, just like Big Foot and Yeti. According to the alleged witnesses, Nessie is supposed to have a long neck and long body, thanks to which she resembles a prehistoric plesiosaur.
