Saillon is a historic town, picturesquely situated on a rocky hill above the plain, against the backdrop of snow-capped alpine peaks. For centuries, grapevines and fruit trees have been grown here, and the area is famous for its hot springs used in thermal baths.
The buildings in the oldest part of Sillon climb steeply up the hill to the round Bayart Tower at its top. Below, there are orchards and vineyards that create a picturesque setting for historic buildings.
The settlement at the site of Sillon was already in Roman times. The local thermal springs were known, and there were fortifications in the place of the Bayart tower. The town was founded in the 11th century, and the area is also associated with the legendary "good robber" Farinet. He has a museum in Sillon. Every summer, a medieval and handicraft festival takes place here. There is also an interesting Fake Money Museum.
A big attraction of Sillon are the local vineyards, including the Farinet Grapevines, whose name refers to the figure of a medieval robber. Some vineyards can be visited and the local wine can be tasted.
The Saillon thermal spring has been used since Roman times. Today, modern, but intimate Saillon Thermal Baths operate here, which guarantee rest and relaxation surrounded by beautiful views.
