Montreux is located on Lake Geneva and is part of the so-called Swiss Riviera. It is a popular holiday resort, whose most important monument is the castle of Chillon standing on a rocky island.
The shores of Lake Geneva are famous for their mild climate and beautiful views. The combination of hills covered with vineyards, whitewater high Alpine peaks and blue waters of the lake creates unique scenery in which holiday resorts are woven. One of them is Montreux, whose beauty has been appreciated by, among others Charlie Chaplin or Freddie Mercury. Today, each year, it attracts thousands of tourists seeking relaxation by the water, as well as participants in several festivals, including one of the largest jazz festivals in Europe, which takes place at the turn of June and July.
Montreux has a nice, partly stone building that extends around the tree-lined promenade. It leads around the Chillon Castle, whose walls rise above the islet on Lake Geneva. This place has inspired writers and poets for centuries, including Lord Byron, who wrote the poem "Prisoner of Chillon" in his honor. To admire Montreux and its panoramas, you can go on a cruise on Lake Geneva on a side-propelled ship or take the Rochers-de-Naye cog railway to the lookout point, from which numerous hiking trails begin in the surrounding mountains.
