Monteceneri is a commune in the Alps situated under the Monte Ceneri Pass. Within it, there is the church of Santa Maria degli Angeli, characterized by unusual, modern architecture.
The commune consists of several mountain villages, the largest of which are Medeglia, Bironico, Rivera and Sigirino located at the bottom of a wide valley that climbs towards the Monte Ceneri Pass. Under the pass, road and rail tunnels are pierced, which provide communication with the neighboring valleys.
The villages of Monteceneri already existed in the Middle Ages and belonged to the Diocese of Como. Here you can see historic churches such as the Church of Camignolo, built in the 10th century and decorated with Gothic frescoes. However, the most important religious building in the commune is the Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli erected on the Riveria. It is a modern, austere brick building, referring to the surrounding landscape and defensive architecture. She is considered one of the icons of contemporary religious architecture.
Monteceneri's attractions include outdoor activities. There are the Splash & Spa Tamaro thermal baths, the Monte Tamaro rope park and the Tamaro toboggan run. They are located on Mount Tamaro, which can be accessed by cable car.
