The Royal Renaissance building, designed by Axel Anderberg, houses the Royal Opera, which is the Swedish national opera and ballet theater. The style of the building corresponds to the Royal Palace and the parliament building. The opera specializes in international repertoire, staging the finest performances from around the world.
The opera house was founded in 1773 by King Gustav III and was then in the building at the square of Gustav Adolf. Today, in the monumental Anderberg building at the Royal Gardens, we can sit on one of the 1200 seats for spectators, and also watch the spectacle in the company of the royal family, whose private lodge is located just above the orchestra stand.
The Royal Opera building also houses the Cafe Opera cafe, restaurant and permanent exhibition presenting the repertoire from 1773 to modern times.
