Båstad is a resort town on the Kattegat Strait. There are tennis courts here, where the Swedish Open tournament is played, as well as a sandy beach and many recreational areas.
The city was founded in the 15th century and was primarily of commercial importance. There was a port from which timber was transported from Swedish forests to Denmark by ships. Today, Båstad harbor is mainly used by yachts and sailing boats, as well as a small number of fishing boats.
From the mid-nineteenth century, tourists began to come to Båstad in greater numbers. There is a sandy Båstad beach, a pier with a bathing pavilion and saunas. Tennis competitions played on the local courts have a long tradition. Their history is remembered by the Swedish Tennis Museum.
Båstad's attractions also include the historic late Gothic St. Mary's Church and the picturesque Norrviken Gardens. The coast around the city is very diverse. Its most beautiful part with rocks and cliffs is protected by the Hovs Hallar nature reserve.
