The historic palace was one of the country mansions belonging to the Swedish royal family. It was built in 1865 and then expanded to its present size in 1874-1876. Currently, it houses a small gallery, restaurant and cafe.
Adjacent to the palace are extensive gardens with the largest collection of rhododendrons in northern Europe. It includes 10,000 shrubs of 500 different varieties. Outdoor concerts with national and international stars are organized in the gardens. Among others, Brian Adams, Bob Dylan and Norah Jones.
The royal gardens as they are known today were founded at the beginning of the 20th century by prince Gustaf Adolf, future king Gustaf VI Adolf and his wife, princess Margaret. It was the favorite residence of the royal couple until the monarch's death in 1973. Then the palace and gardens were donated to the city authorities.
