Sofiero Castle Garden

Local name: Sofiero Slottsträdgård

The extensive gardens are the highlight of the former royal residence, Sofiero Palace. They house the largest collection of rhododendrons in northern Europe, with 10,000 bushes of 500 different varieties. The gardens often host open-air concerts with national and international stars. Among others, Brian Adams, Bob Dylan and Norah Jones.

The gardens were established at the beginning of the 20th century by prince Gustaf Adolf, future king Gustav VI Adolf and his wife, princess Margaret. Sofiero Palace was the favorite residence of the royal couple until the monarch's death in 1973. Then the palace and gardens were donated to the city authorities. The only condition was that the city authorities would undertake to keep the gardens unchanged.
