The museum is dedicated to Danish shipping from the 15th century to the present day. It was founded in 1915 and was initially located in Kronborg Castle in Helsingor. In 2013, they were relocated to its current location, the former Helsingør dry dock. In addition to the exhibition space, there is also a cafe, library and conference rooms.
The museum's collection includes ship models, paintings, photographs, and other shipping related artifacts. The collection of paintings has several thousand exhibits, and the collection of photographs consists of over 33 thousand photos. They illustrate almost all Danish ships since 1880. Special exhibitions are devoted to the Danish maritime rescue service and the lighthouses. You can also get to know the realities of the daily life of sailors and sailors from the 16th century to the present day.
