Park Campo del Moro

Local name: Campo del Moro

Campo del Moro is the gardens surrounding the Royal Palace in Madrid. They are mainly known for their beautiful old trees. Their today's romantic character is emphasized by two historic fountains built on the order of Queen Isabella II - the Triton fountain and the Seashell fountain, as well as freely growing, even 170-year-old trees.

The gardens cover an area of 20 hectares. Their name literally means "Moorish field", refers to the times in which the camp of the invaders who wanted to conquer the city (XII century) was located here.

The beginnings of the Campo del Moro gardens date back to the reign of King Philip II - they were then used as hunting grounds, small game hunting was organized here. The gardens have been transformed many times, new projects were created by royal architect Jan Sachetti and Pascual y Colomer.
