The Arc de Triomphe in Madrid is a memorial building erected in honor of the victory against the forces of the Republic during the civil war. It has a total height of 49 m. The arch is decorated with sculptures, among which the most important is Quadriga de Minerva, crowning the building. The arch has Latin inscriptions about victory.
It was created in the years 1950–1956. It is the work of the architects Modesto López Otero and Pascual Bravo Sanfeliú. Ornaments were made by Moisés de Huerta, Ramón Arregui and José Ortells. The location of the arch is important in the context of the battle for the city during the civil war in the place where it arose. The battle lasted 858 days: from November 17, 1936 to March 28, 1939.
It was the bloodiest battle in Madrid. The triumphal arch is a tradition of Roman architecture, which consisted in building a gate to commemorate the victory in the war and welcome the victorious troops entering the city. the arch is unique because it was built on the battlefield, not as a welcome gate.
