Lekeitio is a popular resort on the Bay of Biscay. It combines the charm of medieval buildings, a traditional fishing port and an intimate holiday destination.
In the past, the city was primarily a fishing port and a local trade center. However, from the 19th century on, its character began to change. The coast of the Bay of Biscay has become a popular vacation spot, mainly due to its wide, sandy beaches and mild climate.
The Lekeitio Center has a preserved medieval spatial layout, and the most significant building here is the Basilica of the Assumption of the Mother of God. You can see historic stone houses around. The vicinity of Lekeitio Port can boast of preserved traditional Basque buildings. In this area there is also a well-known walking place, Lekeitio Kaia, i.e. a pier from which you can watch the coast and ships entering the port.
Lekeitio and its surroundings are known for their nice sandy beaches. In many places, guesthouses and hotels are right on the shore, and it takes a few minutes to get to the beach. The most famous of the beaches here are Isuntza Beach and Karraspio Beach.
In the past, Lekeitio was primarily a fishing port. Currently, many boats mooring here are used for transporting tourists. There is a small islet in the area, Garraitz Island. At low tide they can be reached on foot, at high tide it is necessary to use a boat.
