Carboneras is a resort town on the Mediterranean coast. It is surrounded by mountainous areas under the protection of the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Reserve. A castle from the 16th century and a lot of traditional buildings have been preserved here.
The town is situated on the slopes of mountains descending into the sea. The oldest district with white houses with flat roofs is concentrated around the small port. New apartment buildings and hotels rise above everything, and the castle, erected in the mid-16th century, dominates over everything and is an excellent viewpoint over the surrounding area.
The area around Carboneras includes the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Nature Reserve. There is also a picturesque Dead Beach, where you can relax away from civilization. The attraction of Carboneras is also a fully developed sandy beach located right next to the city. Despite the development of tourism, the village has retained its intimate character and is a place for a quiet rest without the crowds.
