Shelters from the Spanish Civil War

Local name: Refugios de la Guerra Civil Española

The Spanish Civil War shelters in Almeria were built in 1937-1938. They have been open to the public since 2006. They have the form of an underground labyrinth with a total length of more than 4 km, with a 1 km long section open to tourists. It can only be visited with a guide in groups of up to 30 people.

The sightseeing route includes, among others private shelters, an operating room, a pantry and connections to other tunnels. The shelters were built according to the design of the local architect Guillermo Langle Rubio.

The shelters are located at an average depth of 9 meters below the ground, with the lowest sections lying below the level of the can. About 70 entrances lead to them. Efforts were made to arrange them so that the entrance to the shelters was not more than 100 meters from anywhere in the city.
