Begur is a small historic town situated on a slope of 200 meters above the Costa Brava. It is an intimate holiday resort that has retained the charm of the Spanish countryside and a great base for exploring the surroundings of Girona.
The old town of Begur is just a few kilometers from the sea. However, it forms one tourist center with the smaller towns situated below. The beaches here are sandy, separated by rocks. Many of them are situated in coves, which gives a sense of greater privacy. The most famous beaches in the area are El Raco Beach, Fonda Beach and Sa Riera Beach.
The buildings of the village rise up the slope towards the ruins of Castle Begur, which is a great vantage point over the surrounding area. The old fortifications have also been partially preserved in the city. The buildings here are very diverse. Alongside the traditional stone houses with tiled roofs, there are many colonial-style 19th century mansions. They were built by merchants who were returning from trade trips, among others to the Caribbean or South Africa.
Begur is a good base for exploring the area. From here you can also go hiking in the surrounding pine forests. A popular destination for walks is the Fornells and Aiguablava Viewpoint, which offers a beautiful view of the coast.
