SUBOTICA tourist attractions

+25 attractions

Subotica is located several kilometers from the Hungarian border and is described as the most Hungarian of Serbian cities. There are bilingual names, Hungarian newspapers, and Hungarian cuisine in restaurants. The buildings of the city come primarily from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries and represent the Art Nouveau style.

The city was founded in the fourteenth century and because of its location has repeatedly passed under the rule of various countries of the region. It also had various names, and during its history it changed them about 200 times.

Today's Subotica is primarily a city of Hungarian culture. A large Hungarian community lives here all the time, which cultivates its traditions and uses its own language.

The city center is built with Art Nouveau buildings similar to those seen in Hungarian cities. At the main square stands the monumental town hall building with intricate decorations and a very extensive body. The attraction of the Town Hall Square is the so-called Blue Fountain.

Fountains are the hallmark of Subotica and there are over a dozen of them in the Old Town. They blend in nicely with the buildings from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, and on hot days give some respite.
