The New Synagogue in Szeged is one of the largest Jewish temples in Hungary. It represents a unique eclectic style that combines elements from different eras and regions. It is an active temple of a small Jewish community, but it is also open to the public. The richly decorated interior of the synagogue attracts attention with stained glass windows that depict the history of the Jewish people, as well as the dome symbolizing the world. The altar wardrobe (Aron ha-kodesh) is also remarkable.
The synagogue was built in 1900-1902, and was designed by Lipót Baumhorn. It is 48 meters long and 35 meters wide and is almost 49 meters high. The internal shape of the dome crowning the temple is characteristic of the Baroque style, while its design indicates Byzantine inspiration. The columns supporting the gallery represent the Romanesque style, while the starry ceiling over the organs reflects the Gothic style.
