Caransebeș is a city whose center is a mixture of historical and modern buildings. For centuries, the influences of different cultures have mixed here, which results in a multicultural chaos typical of small Romanian cities.

For centuries, the city was inhabited by a large group of descendants of German settlers. The street layout typical of German cities has been preserved to this day. It is overlapped with the later buildings from the time of the Habsburg monarchy with two-story, eclectic tenement houses. Above it rise the domes of the Orthodox Church of the Ascension and St. Elijah erected after the unification of Romania and a symbol of national rebirth. Among the monuments of the city is also the late Gothic Cathedral of St. George .

The Caransebeș is surrounded by low mountains crisscrossed by deep ravines and river valleys. Two national parks have been created here, the Cheile Nerei-BeușnițaNational Park and the Semenic-Cheile Caraşului National Park with many walking routes.
