Băile Herculane is one of the most important Romanian thermal spas. Its origins date back to Roman times, and during the reign of the Habsburgs it was one of the most visited resorts by the imperial family. Today it regains its former splendor. Additionally, its surroundings are perfect for active tourism.
The origins of the spa are related to the Romans. It was them who for over 200 years used the local hot water with radioactive elements in treatment and thermal baths. After the fall of the Empire, this place was forgotten and only revived as an exclusive resort in the 18th century.
The old part of Băile Herculane has the unique charm of a Habsburg spa. Its most important buildings are located around an elongated square with the statue of Hercules. There are renovated 19th century hotels, as well as the Baths of Neptune and Termy Cerna. In recent years, the Venera Thermal Bath has also been opened here. Lower down in the valley there is a new part of the spa with recreation centers and boarding houses. Many of them have their own thermal pools and small spa centers.
The city is within the Domogled-Valea Cernei National Park. The surrounding mountains are perfect for hiking. There are also picturesque waterfalls, such as Bigăr Waterfall, Beușnița Waterfall or La Văioaga Waterfall. There are also rock outcrops such as the Banacki Sphinx. An interesting fact is Lake Ochiul Beiului with an intense sapphire color of water.
