The Soares dos Reis National Museum is located in Carrancas Palace. It bears a name commemorating the outstanding Portuguese sculptor Antónia Soares dos Reis. At the museum you can see an extensive collection of Portuguese art from the 19th and 20th centuries, including painting, sculpture and furniture. There are also exhibitions on metalworking and ceramics. In the museum you can admire the works of, among others Domingos Sequeira, António Carvalho, Aurélia de Souza, Rodolfo Pinto and Augusto Santo.
The museum was founded from the foundation of Peter IV in 1833. Initially, it was located in the monastery of Santo António and exhibited religious works confiscated from Portuguese monasteries and from supporters of Miguel I. In 1911, the Museum received a large collection of the works of the sculptor Soares dos Reis.
