The Clérigos Tower granite bell tower is part of the Roman Catholic church of Igreja e Torre dos Clerigos. It is one of the most characteristic symbols of the city and at the same time the highest tower in Porto, which often appears on postcards. On the top of the 75-meter tower there is a viewing terrace. You can get there by climbing 6 floors and 240 stairs. It is a great place to admire the panorama of the city with the river in the background and take souvenir photos.
The church was built in 1732-1750. The complex was built on a hill, where men sentenced to death by hanging were buried. The construction of the belfry at the back of the western part of the building began in 1754, i.e. after the church was completed. Its architect was Italian Nicolau Nasoni. It was designed in a typical Baroque style with strong decorations reminiscent of the shape of Tuscan Campanillas.
