Church of the Clergymen

Local name: Igreja dos Clérigos

Igreja e Torre dos Clérigos (Church and tower of Clérigos) is one of the most recognizable symbols of Porto. It was one of the first Baroque buildings erected in Portugal, as well as the first Baroque church built on the plan of an ellipse, not a cross.

The most interesting architectural element of the temple is a slim tower (Torre dos Clerigos) with a height of 75.6 meters. This building towers over the city, and from its top there is a wonderful panorama of Porto. To see it, however, you need to climb as many as 240 stairs and six floors.

The church was built in 1732-1750, while the tower adjacent to it between 1754-1763. The project was taken care of by Italian architect and painter - Nicolau Nasoni. The front of the temple is richly decorated with typical Baroque motifs such as wreaths and shells.
