The Portuguese Photography Center is a place whose main task is to promote and preserve Portugal's photographic heritage. He collects archives and manages the National Photography Collection. Temporary exhibitions are also organized here, while the permanent exhibition includes a rare and valuable collection of cameras. The building also houses a specialized library and store.
The tour is free, but prior reservation is required. The Portuguese Center of Photography was created in 1997 by the Ministry of Culture, and is currently under the care of the General Registry Archives. It is located in the building of the former prison and Court of Appeal, Chain of Relation. The first exhibitions were inaugurated immediately after the creation of the center in 1997. In the years 2000–2001 the building was renovated and adapted for exhibition purposes.
