World of Discoveries is an innovative interactive museum about marine expeditions, the era of the Great Geographic Discoveries, famous Portuguese sailors and explorer. It is a space for cultural meetings, which aims to spread knowledge about geographical discoveries and the history of Portuguese sailing.
The theme park has a three-dimensional terrestrial globe, cartographic maps, a sailing area with recreated sea paths, full-size replicas of tools and instruments used in sailing, constructions of small boats and information touch screens. World of Discoveries is particularly child-friendly, but suitable for all ages. Trips are guided by guides in period costumes.
The building in which the institution is located is the old Real Companhia Velha warehouses, in the Miragaia district, i.e. in the historic center of Porto. The halls have been adapted in accordance with the new purpose. The museum covers a usable area of 5,000 square meters, which has been divided into themed rooms. World of Discoveries was opened in 2014. The property belongs to the company Douro Azul, which has invested 8 million euros in its creation.
