The Church of Saint Joseph of Taipas was designed by Carlos Cruz Amarante and built in the years 1795-1878 in a classic style. The chapel that is part of it is older and dates from 1666. The church has a painting from 1845 depicting the Barcas bridge disaster, as well as the oldest city crib dating back to the 18th century and originating from the Machado de Castro School. It is also worth paying attention to the valuable image of the German school depicting Our Lady of Providence.
The church is run by the Brotherhood of Souls of Saint Joseph of Taipas. Every year, the anniversary of the Barcas Bridge Crash is celebrated here, in which nearly four thousand people died. It is possible to visit the crypt, where some of the victims were buried, as well as the belfry, from which you can enjoy a fantastic view of the city. A small museum is also located in the church.
