Lamego is a small, quiet town belonging to the Alto Douro wine region. The respected Raposeira sparkling wines are produced here, and the city is also known as a center of Marian devotion.
The city was liberated relatively early from Moorish rule, and in 1143 the first Portuguese parliament met here and proclaimed Alfonso I king. Appreciating this fact, the new ruler founded the local cathedral, and the location on the trade route meant that Lama began to develop rapidly. Another impulse was the start of wine production in the 16th century.
Today's Lamego attracts two kinds of tourists. The first of these are wine lovers, who will find numerous wineries and wine shops here, and in the area of Lamy, they can visit vineyards and wine cellars. The second direction of development is religious tourism, based on one of the most important Portuguese sanctuaries, Nossa Senhora dos Remedlos.
The sanctuary is one of the most important attractions of Lamy and even people who are not very religious can admire its monumental baroque stairs and beautiful views of the Douro Valley from the square in front of the church. In addition to the sanctuary in Lame, you can also visit the Se cathedral with a Romanesque shape and renaissance interior, the former bishop's palace, which houses the local museum, and the medieval Lame Castle.
