Local name: Museu do Mosteiro de Arouca

Museum of Sacred Art was founded in the first half Of the twentieth century and is located on the floor of the former monastery of Arouca. His exhibition consists of unique objects and works of art from the 12th to 18th centuries that once adorned the interior of the monastery. The richest collection of Portuguese sacred art contains delightful fabrics, artfully made devotional items and well-preserved furnishings. The interior of the museum is decorated with masterpieces of painting and sculptures of outstanding Portuguese artists, such as Diogo Teixeira and Jean de Rouen.

The female monastery of Arouca was built in the first half XII century. The building was inhabited by nuns until 1886, when the last abbess died. After her death, the monastery along with the entire heritage became the property of the Treasury. Since 1910, the building has been named a national monument.

The Brotherhood of Saint Mafalda takes care of the museum.
