Lagos is a large holiday and tourist resort in the Algarve region, located by the sea, in the vicinity of popular sandy beaches. There is also a modern marina for yachts, and from the port you can take a trip along the cliff shore.
The area around Lagos is considered the most beautiful on the entire southern coast of Portugal. Steep cliffs of golden color and unusual rock forms dominate here, which give the area a wild, unique beauty. In the east, you can find wide, sandy beaches, and in the west, small bays. The most-visited beaches in the Lagos area are Meia Praia, Praia da Luz and Dona Ana.
Contemporary, consisting largely of hotels and guesthouses, Lagos has expanded around the 16th century Old Town, which still has a characteristic southern climate, and taverns and bars in the tenement houses. There are two valuable baroque churches with paintings on the vaults, which were rebuilt after the tragic earthquake of 1755. In the City Museum, you can see monuments about the history of Lagos, including Roman mosaics and coins. On the outskirts of the city there is a small private zoo surrounded by a park with plants from all continents.
