Post-Camaldolese monastery

Local name: Klasztor Pokamedulski

The Pokamedulski Monastery is located on a hill above Lake Wigry. Formerly one of the richest buildings of this type in Europe. This 17th-century building now offers visitors many attractions. You can visit the John Paul II Museum, the clock tower and the crypts where the monks were once buried.

The Erem was founded by John II Kazimierz Vasa in return for daily prayer, which was supposed to prevent unhappiness in Poland. Originally the monastery occupied the mansion and wooden buildings, and after the fire in the seventeenth century a monastery was erected and a late Baroque church was erected.

In the middle of the temple you can admire the seven altars made in rococo style. Before the chancel there is a descent to the Camaldolese catacombs. The dead were condemned. The bodies were laid in niches, on brick boards under the head. At present there are two glazed niches where dead bones are visible. On one of the walls is preserved 18th century painting called "Death dance".

In the monastery there are rooms included in the museum dedicated to the Polish Pope: the apartments, the chapel in which John Paul II celebrated the service, the papal reading room. Additional attractions include guest rooms and suites.
