Wigry National Park is one of the oldest national parks in Poland. It's located on the north edge of Augustów Primeval Forest. This full of reservoirs picturesque area was created due to the last glacial period. It consists of 42 lakes of different shapes and depths. The largest one is Wigry Lake which is characterized by a twisted coastline, numerous islands, bays, depths, lake uphills, and coastal shallows. The oddity of the park are so-called "biscuits" - small lakes surrounded by peat-moss mires where water has a color of a tea. Many rivers flow through the park including the Czarna Hańcza.
The area of the park consists of many protected plant and animal species. Because of the terrain and surface waters, it's mostly overgrown with mossy coniferous pine-spruce forests. It's rich in moss, lichen, and algae. The forests and reservoirs are inhabited by various vertebrates. Special attention is dedicated to the protection of beavers and some species of fish.Wigry National Park offers many attractions for visitors such as the Camaldolese Monastery Complex and the Museum of Wigry in Stary Folwark presenting the interesting exhibitions dedicated to the nature and history of the region.
