Stanisław Markiewicz Viaduct

Local name: Wiadukt im. Stanisława Markiewicza

Neo-Renaissance viaduct Stanisław Markiewicz in the form of a snail was built in 1902-1905. It owes its original appearance to three cooperating designers: the structure was designed by Eng. Karol Sommer, eclectic architecture by Stefan Szyller, and sculptural decor by Jan Woydyga. There is a gallery at the bottom of the viaduct.

Beautiful sculptures attract attention. In the central place you can see the symbolic composition, which includes a woman in a crown with a book and attributes of science (Warsaw), a mustached strongman (work allegory) and a man with long wet beard and hair (Wisła). In turn, those descending from the viaduct can admire the young mermaid, the symbol of the city. Since the general renovation in 2006-2007, the viaduct has also been lit by lanterns, reconstructed on the basis of archival photographs.

The patron of the viaduct is Stanisław Markiewicz, a doctor and social activist, one of the founders of the Warsaw Hygiene Society. He was the organizer of the first summer summer camps for children in Poland.
